In the present study, nitrogen-doped porous carbonaceous material was prepared from watermelon rind. Urea and melamine were used as nitrogen precursors to investigate the influence of nitrogen functionalities on the structure and temperature-dependent CO2 adsorption behavior. Structural and surface properties of the prepared porous carbonaceous material were characterized using FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, XPS, N2 adsorption-desorption, FESEM, and HRTEM analyses. The results indicate that the obtained carbonaceous material possesses disordered micro-mesoporous carbon structures with distinct nitrogen species, depending on the precursor used. The urea-derived porous carbon (WUF-180) exhibited higher pyrrolic/pyridinic nitrogen content and showed the highest CO2 uptake of 5.61 mmol g-1 at 0 °C, while the melamine-derived porous carbon (WMF-180) contained a higher fraction of graphitic nitrogen and exhibited CO2 adsorption of 1.29 mmol/g at 200 °C. Thermogravimetric adsorption measurements, gas sorption analysis, and fixed-bed microreactor experiments confirmed that CO2 adsorption strongly depends on both pore structure and nitrogen functionality. The results suggest that nitrogen species play a dominant role in determining adsorption performance, whereas watermelon rind serves as a sustainable biomass precursor suitable for hydrothermal carbonization.
