Abstract

Indian coalfields face challenges such as spontaneous combustion, fires, explosions, and hazardous gas emissions. Several researchers studied the spontaneous heating propensity of coal focusing on the thermo-chemical properties. This paper introduces a thermo-physical method using the specific heat capacity of coal to assess the spontaneous heating propensity. The study analyzed 23 coal samples from various Indian coalfields, measuring specific heat capacities at different stages: dehydration and desorption (Cpd), oxidation (Cpo), and pre-combustion (Cppc). The specific heat capacity at the dehydration and desorption stage (Cpd) showed a strong correlation with moisture, volatile matter, crossing point temperature (CPT), thermogravimetric ignition temperature (TGign), and activation energy (TGEa). Notably, Cpd had a significant correlation with TGEa (R2 = 0.77), TGign (R2 = 0.83), and CPT (R2 = 0.75). The Cpd may be serve as an effective indicator for assessing the spontaneous heating propensity of coal as a preventive measure for fire and explosion in mines.
