Abstract

Highly dispersed Cu species on TiO2 were prepared in situ and evaluated for the photocatalytic reduction of toxic hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] in the presence of glycerol. At a low Cu loading of approximately 1 wt%, the catalyst exhibited a high pseudo-first-order reduction rate constant of 0.1288 min−1 under UV–Vis irradiation. Structural and spectroscopic analyses indicate that Cu is predominantly stabilized as isolated, highly dispersed species on TiO2, rather than as nanoparticles or larger aggregates. Glycerol plays a dual role as a sacrificial hole scavenger and coordination agent: its hydroxyl groups can interact with Cu2+, moderating Cu reduction kinetics during photodeposition and suppressing uncontrolled nanoparticle growth. The enhanced Cr(VI) reduction is attributed to improved interfacial charge separation, shallow electron trapping by Cu+/Cu0 redox-active centers, formation of glycerol radical (induced by hole) as active species for reduction, and favorable Cr(VI) adsorption at the catalyst surface. Notably, the optimized Cu/TiO2 system achieved > 99% Cr(VI) photoreduction under natural sunlight, demonstrating its potential as a sustainable, energy-efficient, and cost-effective non-noble-metal photocatalyst for solar-driven remediation of chromium-contaminated water.
