All rare earth elements (REEs) are included in the group of critical minerals which are very much essential for applications in several high technologies, including renewable energy technology in the transition toward carbon–neutral energy. Conventional sources of REEs are limited, so intensive research on secondary resources is being pursued. The enrichment of REEs in coal as well as in associated strata of the Jayant and Nigahi coal mines, Singrauli coalfield, is reported in this article. Samples were collected from these mines and low and high temperature ash (LTA and HTA) have been prepared at 600ºC and 850ºC, respectively. The coals are sub-bituminous in rank with low ash and high volatile content. The mineralogical composition of coals is dominated by kaolinite and quartz with minor content of anatase, siderite, and hematite. These LTA and HTA are termed as laboratory ash, which contains quartz and illite with trace amounts of anatase, rutile, siderite and hematite. The HTA of Jayant coal has a high content of REEs as well as REEs hosting mineral fluoroapatite. The REEs content has reached up to 918.93 and 506.22 mg/kg for laboratory ash and associated rock, respectively. The REEs content of the present laboratory is higher than the cut–grade of economically extractable resource. The Nd content of the present samples is in the range of 75.6 to 246 mg/kg, which is higher than most of the globally reported coal ashes. The Al2O3/TiO2 and TiO2/Zr ratios for provenance evaluation show that the sediments of the coal mines were derived from intermediate and felsic igneous parent rocks.
