Abstract

Ground vibrations resulting from utilization of explosives, as a cheap source of energy, is a continuing problem for the mining industries, the public living nearby and the regulatory agencies responsible for setting standards. A number of predictor equations are available in the literature but none seems to provide fully the ability to predict the vibrations satisfactorily in different geo-mining conditions. The wide differences observed in the effects produced by blasting from mine to mine necessitate an individual study of each mine with a view towards making blasting safe and efficient. Based on investigations in working mines in different parts of the world, a number of vibration predictors have been proposed. The applicability of these predictors to Indian geo-mining conditions was examined by generating data from a number of operating mines. These included iron ore mines, dolomite mines, limestone mines, a chromite mine, a magnesite mine and coal mines. A total of 188 production blasts were monitored and 572 sets of vibration data were collected. Data so obtained were analysed using predictors suggested by various researchers. During analysis it was found the predictor model suggested by USBM is the best fit for almost all sites investigated. Afterwards the designing of safe blasts, the structural response to ground vibration and the frequency of vibration in different formations were also studied. The amplification of vibrations in structure in- creased with their height. Results indicated that rocks in the vicinity of coal mines generated lower frequency vibrations compared to rocks in the non-coal areas except iron ore mines.
