This paper uses the Reliability Index to evaluate the production contingency of an underground longwall mechanised mine. The study has been undertaken with reference to a coal mine of coal India Limited, deploying a shearer, armoured face conveyor (AFC), stage loader, powered support and belt conveyor. Since the mine production system performance depends mainly on winning/loading and transport operations, the evaluation deals with the prediction of risk of mineral loss due to the shearer not contributing to production, and conveying/transport systems not contributing to mineral transportation. This proposition has some practical relevance for adequate assessment of a mine production system and thereby capability of the system has to achieve high productivity.
