Abstract

A study has been performed during post- monsoon period at Rani pond in Dhanbad district of Jhar5khand state in india to know the aquatic ecosystems, which ultimately affect the life cycle of Pisces and affect of mining on pond ecosystem. The physico – chemical characteristics of the pond water showed a marked variation in 3 month. The values for temperature, water deopth, nitrate, phosphate and free carbon dioxide were maximum during August month, and minimum during October month While the values for transparency, pH, methyl alkalinity and dissolved oxygen were higher in October month and lower in August month. Gut content analysis of pisces showed presence of green algae, blue green algae, diatoms, rotifers, copepodes, cladocera, ostracodus and decayed portion of higher plants. These food items help in the growth of Labeo rohita, catla catla, labeo calbasu and puntius sophore in quite good numbers. Therefore, a balanced aquatic ecosystem is present in this Rani pond, which needs further protection so that the food chain of the pisces would not disturb.
