Abstract

The mining industry plays a crucial role in economic and industrial development. Opencast mining accounts for a substantial proportion of total mineral output, and this will increase in the near future due to technological developments. But one of the major detrimental effects of surface mining is the huge amount of overburden and rejects. The recalcitrant nature of mine spoil makes the recovery of land difficult. Thus dump reclamation is of the utmost importance in view of the need to dispose of massive volumes of overburden within limited space and time. Therefore, in this study an attempt has been made to devise methods of nutrient recovery, which are of prime importance in the succession of soil microorganisms and ultimately the bioreclamation of degraded areas. The recovery of nutrients assists the biological succession of pants.
