Abstract
The causative factors affecting fire in sub-bituminous coal benches are highlighted. A conceptual approach to prevention of fire is presented. It is suggested that the temperature of the coal wall must be brought down using a mist sprayer, allowing the coal to become weathered at low temperature. On the basis of heat transfer processes, a mathematical formulation has been made to ascertain the optimum rate of water flow from the sprayer. Modification of the existing layouts and panel workings of the coal block is also suggested.
