Abstract

The three factors, which contribute mostly to development of average stress in coal pillars were identified as depth of cover, solid square pillar size and roadway width. Three-dimensional finite element analyses were carried out covering these parameters so as to arrive at an expression for average stress development in coal pillars in flat seams. This is an improvement over the well-known tributary area theory [1, 2].
