Abstract

Thick incompetent Motur clays resting over competent 25-40 m Upper Barakar sandstones have always been a problem in exploitation of underground coal seams, particularly at greater depths in pench and kanhan coalfields of Satpura Master Gondwana basin. With a view to understanding the effect of clays on subsidence movements, investigations were conducted over three bord and pillar caved panels in No. 1 seam two at Sukri and one at North Chandametta colliery, having 62.2 and 74.8 per cent argillaceous rocks respectively in the superincumbent strata. The non-effective width of extraction was 0.7 times the non-effective width of extraction was 0.7 times the depth at North Chandametta. The angle of draw varied between 7.5° to 41° in the three subcritical panels, while subsidence profiles were generally asymmetrical. Maximum subsidence trough varied from 12 to 62.5 per cent of the volume extracted underground and it was found to increase with maximum subsidence. Even 16.0 mm/m tensile strain was easily absorbed by thick superincumbent Motur clays.
