Abstract

At Chasnalla Colliery, coal is extracted both by opencast and underground mining. Shafts for access to underground workings are located at the central part of the property. Opencast mining consists of two quarries, namely Eastern Quarry and Western Quarry. Mining is in progress in Western Quarry. While the western part of Eastern Quarry is still being mined, mining was discontinued long ago in a stretch of about 880 m in the eastern part of it. Recently, the colliery management has thought of restarting surface mining to extract coal from XIII/XIV Seam up to a depth of 0 mRL in this discontinued part of Eastern Quarry by expanding the quarry southward. The paper includes design aspect, estimation of reserve and waste to be handled during the proposed quarry expansion in order to help in assessing feasibility of expansion of this project by the mine authority.
