Abstract

Global primary energy consumption increases with the increase in population and economic development. Coal will continue to be an important energy source in many parts of the world in the foreseeable future. The conventional coal fired power system produces lowest cost electrical power at the but this large scale conversion has an environmental penalty as it releases large amount of green house gases and is responsible for global warming. Stricter governmental regulations on pollutant emissions and the need to improve process efficiency have led to the development of advanced power generation systems. Underground coal gasification is one such advanced system. This paper addresses UCG production process. Technical factors like coal rank & site access, seam thickness, depth of occurrence of seam, angle of inclination of coal seam, ash content of coal, porosity and permeability of coal, presence of subsurface water, temperature, roof rock characteristics, water table etc. which influence the UCG process are discussed. Present status of worldwide UCG activities also discussed in detail. In India, It is Righ tine in indo UCG should come from Drawing Board Stage to Implementation Stage.
