Abstract

Surface subsidence investigations were conducted over panel E in 16.5 m thick Lalpeth seam at Hindustan Lalpeth Colliery No. 1 in Wardha Valley coalfield. The width-depth ratio of the panel extracted by bord and pillar system with hydraulic sand stowing was 2.9 The height of extraction was 10.45 a. The non-effective width (NEW) of extraction was 0.69 times the depth. The maximum subsidence was only 0.9 per cent of the total extraction thickness. The residual subsidence was 16.4 – 21.4 per cent. The angle of draw varied between 170 and 360. subsidence profiles were not uniform due to stokes being left in 2 the goaf and swelling of black cotton soil. The time factor was about 200 days after extraction. Volume of subsidence trough was 0.67 per cent of the volume extracted underground. The maximum slope, compressive and tensile strains were 3.2 mm/m, 1.6 mm/m and 1.7 mm/m respectively. Subsidence movements did not affect either the surface topography or the vegetation.
