Abstract

The stability of the slopes of an open-pit copper mine was analysed in two dimensions with the use of a finite-difference code. The properties of the rock material were determined in the laboratory and subsequently modified to approximate those of the in-situ rock mass of the open-pit slopes. Geotechnical mapping was undertaken to determine the critical orientation of structural discontinuities. The results of the numerical modeling work indicated that an open-pit 148 m in depth would be stable with overall slope angles of 60°.
