The slope failure in an opencast coal mine was examined to identify the principal causative factors and was back analysed to estimate the shear strength parameters. The analysis has revealed that the presence of weak and moderately to highly weathered rock mass overlain by soil, external loading in the form of an overburden dump on the slope are important factors, which have influenced the stability. The ingress of rain water into slope mass and the consequent buildup of pore water pressure has triggered the failure. The probabilistic methods better explain the slope failure than the deterministic methods. Rock mass classification based empirical methods don’t adequately reflect the stability condition of a rock slope. This paper briefly highlights the slope stability scenario in the opencast coal mines of Wardha Valley Coalfield, discusses a case of slope failure in terms of its general detail, causative factors and the results of stability analysis and finally suggests few practical measures for overall improvement of slope stability in this coal field.
