Abstract

A few technology knowledge gaps in the control of mine fires and environmental pollution control and abatement programmes have been identified and examined the scope of application of bio-technological approach in resolving them. The problems thus identified and bio-technological methods offered for their solution are. (1) Inhibiting the oxidative heating of coal. (2) Device/technique for filtering out CO from mine air during fire/heating and thereby facilitating fire combat as well as recovery free from exposure of CO. (3) Abatement of water and air pollution problems caused from mining operations. It could be inferred that (i) Coal oxidation does get influenced from bacterial action due to pyrites in coal. Suppressing pyretic oxidation with bactericidal agents have a good potential in inhibitor development studies, a yet unresolved problem. (ii) The phenomenon of bacterial disappearance of CO have wide promise in development of CO filter at ambient temperature conditions in mine roadways which would be helpful for better fire combat and recovery (case studies shown). (iii) Macrophytes like Pistia/salvania/water hyacinth available in plenty in India have wide promise as an efficient method for stripping off toxic metal ions from water. (iv) Self-neutralizing effect of CO2 like increased photosynthesis rate of soyabean, sun slower as well as water utilization efficiency with rise in CO2- may be tapped for CO2 abatement programme to check global warming.
