Abstract

Reported in the present paper are the results of investigation on the effect of amendment of red lateritic soil of Dhanbad with different doses of fly ash on the growth and yields of some root vegetable crops, like carrot and radish. The results evince that in the case of radish, the crop yield increased with increasing doses of fly ash compared to control; the maximum yield being at 15% fly ash amendments. The trend has also been found to hold true for carrot the percentage increase in the yield at the maximum dose being at 15% amendment. The analytical results also show that the physico-chemical properties of the soil get greatly improved with the amendment with fly ash at different doses; the maximum being at 15% amendment of soil with fly ash, which is why the crop yields have increased due to improvement in the fertility status of soil. Most importantly yet that there is no carry-over of trace and heavy elements in these crops. In this way, the amendment of soils with fly ash is quite safe and effective as well for getting increased yields of the root crops.
