Abstract

The present paper discusses the prospects of utilization of fly ash in agriculture sector to get enhanced yields of vegetable crops in the degraded soils. The physico-chemical properties, such as pH, EC, porosity, bulk density (BD), water holding capacity (WHC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), dehyrogenase activity and texture of the soil, after mixing with fly ash were found to improve the soil properties greatly, making the amended soil richer in essential nutrient elements and more fertile. Amendment of fly ash enhances the growth performance of selected vegetable viz, carrot (Daucus carota- family Umbelliferae) and radish (Raphanus sativus – family Cruciferae). The pot experiments were carried out with mixed soil, fly ash does being 5%, 10% and 20% by weight, in addition to the usual application of recommended dose of NPK fertilizer. The vegetables grown in fly ash amended soil have also shown higher yield compared to non-amended soil. The fly ash-soil amendment technology will thus go a long way in greatly enhancing and improving the agricultural production and economy of the state.
