Total suspended particulate matter (TSPM) and respiratory particulate matter (PM10) are the main air pollutants in ambient air of opencast coal projects (CPs). The present paper focuses on the ambient air quality analysis for the 5 opencast coal projects (OCPs) scattered around Wardha Valley, namely Durgapur, Padampur, Gughus, Sasti, Hindustan Lalpet Mines of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL). This paper examines the ambient air quality status around the opencast coal projects and investigates into the air quality dispersion modeling which has been attempted using fugitive dust model (FDM) developed by United States Environment Protection Agency (USEPA). With the help of FDM, dust concentration has been predicted at selected receptor locations. The 24-hourly average concentrations of TSPM and PM10 were monitored durng winter sean. On an average the PM10 concentration in ambient air constituted 17.00 to 60.03% of TSPM concentration. The predicted values of total suspended particulate matter (TSPM) using FDM are 65 to 95% of observed values. The air quality modeling using FDM reveals that the dust generated due to mining activities does not contribute to ambient air quality significantly in surrounding areas beyond 500 m in normal meteorological condition
