Abstract

This paper report the leaching behavioru of coal combustion residues viz. flay ash, bottom ash and pond ash. The study of leaching behaviour of 24 samples from 6 different thermal power stations were carried out using open column percolation experiment in order to understand the mobility of various trace/toxic elements under environmental conditions that one would actually expect in the real life situation. This study has tried to rule out the long nurtured apprehension of trace/toxic elements leaching that may finally lead to the contamination of groundwater/surface water besides other various environmental implications. The study has shown that the coal combustion residues of these thermal power station using coal of Raniganj-Jharia region do not contain trace/toxic elements in such alarming limit that should be feared and that these materials can be used as a mine backfill material in an environmentally benign manner.
