Abstract

Water is the vital source for all kind of life on this planet; on the other hand it is also a source that is adversely affected in both ways quantitatively and qualitatively due to human activity directly or indirectly. Mining and its associated mineral processing activities not only use a lot of water but also affect the hydrological regime of the area and often the water quality. Mining has started long back, when the concept of environmental protection did not exist. Mining in those days has damaged the water resources of some parts of the country very seriously. Under this background the study was conducted to know the existing water quantity and water quality conditions in a Limestone mining area in Bamangaon and Mehgaon of Katni District of M.P. Various Hydrogeology studies were conducted to know availability of water in the area, and physic-chemical study of surface and ground water was also conducted to know the effect of mining on the quality of water in the study area in different seasons of the year.
