Abstract

Most of the production from underground coal mines in India is obtained by breaking coal using explosives. The trend is likely to continue in near future, as mechanical cutting of coal has not taken off to the extent anticipated. More efficient and safer explosive system with stricter quality control concepts and efficient application techniques are to be adopted from strategic point of view for augmenting production and productivity from underground coal mines. Periodic check of the quality and performance of the explosives of different manufacturers collected from the users’ magazines may serve as a useful mechanism towards ensuring safety and quality of such products. In the light of above this paper envisages on quality ascertaining of permitted explosives taking into an account a case study of 47 permitted samples covered in five lots of explosive sample supplied to different areas of Singareni Collieries Co. Ltd. (SCCL) over a period of one year.
