Abstract

This paper deals with the role of rock mass properties in different failure criteria. The rock properties considered in different criteria along with their influence on the stability of strata in underground opening have been discussed. It has been found that there are three are three properties, generally involved in the failure criteria, they are compressive strength, shear strength and tensile strength accompanied with compressive stress, shear stress and tensile stress. The different type of pillars left in the underground opening support the roof, thus it is important to know the relevant properties and apply suitable failure criteria for specific design of underground opening and support layout.
