As compared to extraction of other major minerals, quality and dimensions are the most vital characteristics to determine the price of dimensional stone. It needs special attention in selection and adoption of appropriate quarrying methods. At present dimensional stone extraction process in our country to a large extent is manual with some exceptions. The demand for bigger sized blocks is increasing day to day in the international market. This needs for adoption of systematic and efficient method of extraction techniques. The present paper address to various current practices of extraction of dimensional stone in India and their applicability to various geomining conditions. In view of the rising demand the need for technological development for achieving higher production, productivity, better quality and to reduce the generation of waste is stressed and finally suitable measures have been suggested for the betterment of the extraction technology.
