Abstract

The increasing demand for fossil fuels and environmental threat, a number of alternative sources for the conversion of biomass waste material into energy have been studied worldwide. Today the per capita energy consumption of India is declining with increasing its population, which has direct impact on national economy. Utilizing the available biomass waste material for converting into biogas and electricity generation will be only the key solution for overcoming on increasing demand of fossil flues. For this biogas technology seems promising to attain sustainable energy yields without damaging the environment. Use of biogas assures renewable energy supply and balance of green house gases. India is traditionally using biogas since long time but there is need to improve the technology applications and deployment strategies. Bioenergy centralization in urban and decentralization in rural can help government to minimize both the import of fuel derivatives and solid waste processing cost. It was discovered that there are environmental, social and economic benefits in utilizing waste to energy approach. The feasibility of implementing such technologies is mainly dependent on the initial capital investment and operational cost of the facility. Biogas refers to a mixture of different gases produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. Biogas can be produced from raw materials such as agricultural waste, manure, forest littre, algae, green waste and food waste. It is a renewable energy source and in many cases exerts a very small carbon footprint. The main objective of this paper is to investigate bio-gas generation and factors affecting the biogas generation from various organic matters by the biological breakdown. This paper also highlights the using of diverse biomass materials available in the country and the available technologies that are used for converting biomass waste to biogas and electricity.
