Abstract
Sugarcane molasses based distilleries effluent is the major source of anaerobic treatment. In this the methanogenic bacteria are involved in the methanogenesis process (in fermentation) for the production of biogas. The scrubbing process after fermentation played major role in the production of other renewable energies like thermal and electrical form the biogas. The methanogenic bacteria mainly reduce the COD of the effluent due to the emission of methane. During the process the organic pollutants are removed from the environment. If the heavy concentrations of organic contents are present in the effluent, it will increase the oxygen demand. So, BOD & COD levels are mainly increased. Before methanogenesis, hydrolysis & acetogenesis process occur in the anaerobic digestion. But in those processes, only one form of organic matter is converted into another form.
