Abstract

Coal is the basic source of energy for the industrial development around the world. Energy resources and its best utilization decide the industrial growth and prosperity of a country. The methane gas found in coal is boon as a source of conserved fuel during the genesis of coal. It is a viable and an excellent source of a green and clean energy that is being utilized to a great extent these days. The methane gas present in the coal is known as coal bed methane, because methane is the dominant constituent in all the gases present in it. This is one of the most recent discoveries in past couple of decades as a promising energy resource. Coal bed methane (CBM) is a hydrocarbon gas found mainly adsorbed on the internal surface of coal matrix i.e. in cleats, fissures, pores and micro pores. It is also found dissolved in associated ground water. CBM generation and in-place-gas content are deciding factors for CBM exploration. These are guided by various petrography and geological factors like adsorption capacity, depth, macerals content, maturity, cleat system, hydro-geologic condition, structural setup, etc. In-place-gas generation are also controlled by permeability, micro pores, action of micro-organism, reservoir pressure, hydrodynamics of the area, cleat aperture, width and extension, fault etc. methane in coal is hazardous during the mining of coal using underground method and so its exploration, production and utilization prior to mining are a big challenge for the safety of the mining activity. The present paper herein discusses about the prospect of coal bed methane (CBM) as a green and clean energy source. Further, in this paper, an attempt has been made to cover about the genealogy of methane during the genesis of coal, estimation of in-situ gas content using direct and indirect method, determination of methane sorption capacity of coal, safety aspects of mining, various geological controls on CBM and porosity and permeability determination.
