Abstract

The paper deals with the determination of nature of flame of coal based on its physical, chemical and thermal characteristics. The study covers the coal of pachwara central block, Rajmahal Coalfield of Gondwana basin under the regional geology of Jharkhand. Channel coal samples (in-situ) and Run of Mines coal samples collected from different mine locations were used to arrive at the conclusion of nature of flame based on the results of physic-chemical and thermal characteristics under varied conditions. The study has established that coal samples mostly belong to grade F category as per old criteria based on useful heat Value and that the coal samples are non-long flame in nature as per the comparable specified standards and it can be used in the generation of thermal power. As per the new standard based on gross calorific value different coal samples such as channel, run of mines, coal dump and railway siding samples were graded into G8-G12, G10-G14, G9-G12 and G11-G12, respectively which can also be used for the thermal power generation
