The development of the placer mineral industries is a prerequisite for the overall economic development of the country. Placer minerals, a group of naturally available minerals in the beaches that provides basic raw materials for many industrial products, can command a strong market in India. The present study presents the status of international and Indian scenario of beach mineral production. In this paper, the world market has been compared to the Indian market and the increasing rate of production of placer minerals from 1980 to 2005. comparing the production and the demand, it is found that the demand of placer minerals increases twice in the world market. The present study may be useful for economists, policy makers industrialists and scientists for devising appropriate strategies for sustainable coastal mining development.
