Blasting continues to be the most important process in mines owing to the fact that the investment is low in comparison with the mechanical methods. Blast design parameters queue in the process and assume paramount importance while determining the output of a blast. It is imperative that blast fragmentation is central to the blasting process and hence the productivity in a mine. Moreover, the assessment of blast fragmentation assumes a superior role, as without the measurement of fragment size, it is difficult to predict and design the blast. There have been several methods in vogue to determine the blast fragment size. Although sieve analysis is the best-suited method but it is not feasible and practical since the volume of rock blasted is quite large. Other methods are subjective in nature and impractical for engineering judgement. This obviously leads us to “Digital Image Analysis Technique – DIAT”. By far, there have been several DIAT measurement systems and only a few have been consistently occupying the centre stage. This paper systematically introduces the reader to the practicalities of the blast optimization and methods thereof.
