Abstract

The ring road alignment, proposed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), passes through Jharia Coalfield involved in extensive mining activities which have considerable impact over the ground stability. Compete information of workings in each seam of each mine was collected for a back projection of 45° angle of draw from both sides of the road to understand the nature of mining activities, which can influence stability of the road. The proposed alignment passes through Bararee, Digwadih, Jamadoba, moonidih, Malkera, Akashkinari and Govindpur collieries of Bharat Coking Coal Limited and Tata Steel. Safety factor of coal pillars lying within the influenced area of the proposed road were computed from long term stability point of view. At places, the proposed path of the ring road was realigned keeping in view of manifestation and mining activities like surface subsidence, mine fire, potholes etc and existing mining structures. A few mine fire paths were also dealt in the paper.
