This method of using separate berrier devices to segregate safe and unsafe circuits came into existence in early seventies when the problems relating to the safety of complex instrumentation and automation were extremely unsolvable. This electrical separation technique has led to more simpler and safer designs. To appreciate this, one must see to origins of special and complex circuits and how these circuits differ from the original concept of intrinsic safety.
