Abstract

Although the dull coals of the Kargali seam have widely different amounts of inorganic impurities, the dry-mineral-free material has a relatively constant composition. The higher carbon and lower hydrogen in them may be due to the presence of fusain or other high rank organic bodies. On the basis of carbon content alone, the dull coals appear to be more ‘mature’ suggesting a more condensed nucleus than the brights. Both the constituents can be separated into fractions of different densities, but a transition in the properties is also found suggesting that each occurs in mixtures containing varying proportion of the other. The pyridine extracts of both have very similar elementary composition.
