Abstract

The paper describes pilot-plant experiment on non-coking slack coals undertaken at the Central Fuel Research Institute, with a view to obtaining smokeless briquettes from slack coal for use as a domestic fuel. The authors conclude that slack coals briquet ted with 9-11 per cent pitch binder gives the optimum mechanical strength. Best briquettes are obtained with I inch size slack coals. Optimum strength briquettes are obtained on carbonisation at 675°C. The carbonized briquttes burn well without emission of smoke in a domestic ‘chulla’ and hence should e suitable as domestic fuel.
