Abstract

Mining practices in general are associated with the production of dust. In coalmining industry dust is considered a major problem. It may constitute an explosion hazard as well as a health hazard to workers. Inhalation of coal dust over a long period in the reparable size range may affect the lungs of the inhalers by producing a disease called “coal workers’ pneumoconiosis”. The different aspects of the dust problem, including its aetiology, assessment and probable control are discussed here. The possible role of the Central Mining Research Station at Dhanbad in the solution of this problem in India is indicated.
