Hot and humid working conditions has adverse effect on worker’s health and efficiency. Due to inevitable exhaustion of coal at shallow depths mine workings tend constantly to become deeper. In India the time is not far off when adverse underground climatic conditions will become a serious problem to mining engineers. In this country up to now very little work has been done to study environment conditions in coal mines and its effect on the worker. The information given in this paper was originally collected for departmental use at the Central Mining Research Station. It was then thought that its publication with additional observations recently made might be of use to the mining industry. Work on some problems raised in this paper is well on its way at the Central mining Research Station, at Dhanbad.
