Abstract

The paper describes the low temperature fluidized oxidation of coal for the production of humic acids by batch process. A 2” diam inconel two 4” diam mild steel columns and a 1’ diam mild steel column were used as reactors for 2-3, 8-10 and 80-150 lb. of charge respectively. Samla and Jambad Bowlah seam coals from the Raniganj Coalfield were selected for study because of their reactive nature, high moisture, volatile matter and oxygen contents and vitrainous appearance. Air was the fluidizing and oxidizing medium. In some experiments water and nitric acid vapours were mixed with the air eand ‘inconel’ dust to the charge to study their effects on the production of humic acids. It was found that oxidation improved with decrease in particle size and increase in the temperature of oxidation, flow rate of fluidizing and oxidizing medium and duration of oxidation up to a limit. Iron oxide scale produced in the m.s. reactor during experiments had a deleterious effect on oxidation while water and nitric acid vapours and inconel powder had a beneficial effect. However, with the use of an alloy steel reaction vessel and the adoption of optimum temperatures and air flow rates, there was no need to moisten the fluidizing and oxidizing medium or to use a catalyst. The period of oxidation for 70-90% humic acid conversion with 70-80% yield of the oxidized product has been reduced to 25-50 hrs.
