Abstract

Semi-pilot plant studies were carried out on Rawanwara, Ballarpur and Majri coals from Madhya Pradesh and Maharastra to produce semi-coke for industrial and domestic use. The semi-cokes were obtained by (i) carbonisation in 250 lb. capacity rectangular mild steel retorts heated electrically in an oven and by (ii) develoatilisation in a traveling grate stokey pilot plant. Carbonisation tests were also carried out on these coals in Gray-King Assay apparatus at 600ºC and Fischer Assay equipment at 550ºC to determine the l.t.c. characteristics of these coals. This paper presents the results of these investigations and discusses the possibility of utilization of semi-coke obtained, for industrial and domestic use.
