Abstract

Talcher Integrated Complex, as planned by the Industrial Development Corporation of Orissa Ltd., is a Project based on the utilization of the Talcher (Orissa) coal which is completely non-caking in character and does not yield suitable coke for use in conventional blast furnaces. Total reserve of Talcher coal is estimated to be 153.8 million tones. Coal deposits at Talcher, known from 1827, where previously under the Railway authorities and the coal mined was mostly used as fuel in locomotives. After the formation of the N.C.D.C. the management of the Talcher Collieries was transferred to the corporation. Based on the data submitted by CFRI who undertook pilot plant studies of Talcher coal, industrial Development corporation of Orissa Ltd., has drawn up a project report for an industrial complex for the manufacture of coke, pig iron and fertilizer. The Talcher coalfield is situated in Dhenkanal district of Orissa and is about 96 km. to the north east of Cuttack and the proposed plant site is situated at a distrance of 45 km. from the coal mines. Here also other raw materials, e.g. iron ore, limestone and manganese ore, will be supplied from the nearby mines in Orissa by Railway wagons. Utilities like water and power resources are situated at a short distance form the site. The total water requirement complexes are likely to come up; one utilizing coking coal near Ramgarh, Bihar, and the other using non-caking coal at Talcher in Orissa.
