Abstract

Results of investigations carried out on models made out of equivalent materials for working a moderately inclined coal seam having thickness 10 m and lying at a depth of 500 m from the surface with the shield KTU are given. Special emphasis has been laid on explaining the dynamics of front abutment pressure, which changes periodically while working the top slice. Convergence of the coal seam beyond the working face and heaving of the floor coal in the goaf have also periodical characters and with the increase of the front abutment pressure they have been found to increase. At greater depths intensity of heaving of floor coal in the goaf may be very much pronounced, leading to the development of cracks and to the loosening of floor coal. It may help in natural degasification of the coal seam. The character of the breakage of roof, behaviour of the front abutment pressure, deformation of side walls and parameters of supports show that the shield KTU can be successfully used for working thick seams at great depths in India.
