Almost every industry has occasion to transport. Store or handle materials (gas, liquied or solid) which are intrinsically flammable or explosive in nature. With rapid industrialization, the variety and volume of such materials will increase and special equipment will be required in growing numbers to carryout these operations with safety. Towards achieving maximum utilization of equipment produced indigenously and restriction of imports to the minimum and the inescapable, the author pleads generally for a critical review of this aspect of the problem of industrial safety. In particular, he recommends examination of (i) how real and how extensive anticipated dangers are, (ii) how unavoidable present precautions are, (iii) the relaxations that may be possible, and (iv) changes in statutory rules and regulations that may be necessary.
