Abstract

‘Lisasorb’, an indigenous soda-lime product, has been studied for its suitability as Co2 absorbent to be used in self-contained breathing apparatus needed by mine rescue organization, fire service and the Army, where work is to be performed in irrespirable atmosphere. The investigation concerned not only with the routine bench test prescribed in U.K. but also with the physiological reactions shown by the users and their subjective feelings. The entire study was made side by side with ‘Protosorb’, another soda-lime product manufactured by a British company and largely used in breathing apparatus. The results showed that ‘Lisasorb’ is as good as ‘Protosorb’ and satisfied the British specification made for the purpose. Physiological studies made on the users during their work with the apparatus showed that ‘Lisasorb’ could be used safely in the Breathing apparatus However, constant attention should be given to its quality control and the product tested regularly for its good quality according to specification.
