Abstract

The present paper records the results of the quality, rank characteristics and petrographic make up of the six coal horizone encountered in a borehole in the Chuparbhita coalfield, Rajmahal hill area. the study reveals that the coals are high moisture, high volatile non-caking and sub-bituminous type. The most conspicuous feature of these coals are-dull in appearance, sub-hydrous in nature, low in phosphous content and high in inertinite content. These properties are marked features of the Karharbari stage coals. Furthermore, the geological set-up of the area also indicates that the present encountered strata might be a homotaxial equivalent representative of Karharbari stage in the Rajmahal hill area. The geology of the Rajmahal hill area is reviewed in brief. It shows a possible link-up of the present scattered coalfields in the eastern part fo the Chotanagpur Plateau. The nature of occurrence of the Lower Gondwana exposures in Rajmahal hill area indicates that the Barakers are continuing underneath the Rajmahal volcanics and further eastward below the Gangetic alluvium of North Bengal. In view of the strategic position of the area and hitherto virgin, with great possibility of having potential concealed reserve of coal, it is an urgent necessity to undertake an intensive exploratory programme in the area, which may substantially augment the coal reserves of the country.
