Abstract

The paper is base on investigations carried out at four collieries in Jharia coalfield. The physical, geological and economical data available at the collieries was collected and analysed. The surface drainage, underground drainage and the performance of pumps were specially studied and investigated. Other special problems faced by the collieries were also examined. The origin of water in these mines has been described in detail. Comments have been offered on pumping layouts, and selection and maintenance of pumps. The results of output and efficiency tests on pumps are given. Some suggestions have been offered for design of sumps and selection of pipes. The costs of pumping have been analysed.
