In this paper the authors have discussed the requirements and merits and demerits of various props used in longwall workings. The factors which influence the behaviour of props in longwall faces have been stated. Also described are (a) the tests carried out on props and (b) some friction props designed by the authors. The load bearing capacity of wooden props, based on the tests carried out at CMRS, can be approximately calculated from the equation. P = 47.2 – 1.5 h/d Where P = load bearing capacity of the prop in tonne, H = height of the prop in mm and D = average diameter of the prop in mm. The increase in the moisture content below the saturation point of wood and eccentricity affects the load bearing capacity of wooden props. The load requirements of props vary with the increase in seam thickness and the dip of the seam. With wet coal dust applied to the friction surfaces, the M.A.M.C. prop was taking 15 tonne at 2.5 cm yield.
