Abstract

Deep drilling in Jarangdih block which is flanked on either side by Gobindpur-Pichri and Borea faults reveals some interesting phenomena. Coal seams touched within the trough are found to have attained greater maturity than the same seams encountered outside the trough. Greater stress and strain due to heavy faulting and possibly greater depth of burial are likely to be the cause of greater maturity of coals within the trough. Possibly dynamic shearing strain due to heavy and extensive faulting on either side of the trough had led to rise in temperature and, if so, this has been possibly the main cause of increased maturity in coals of the region. These coals, which appear to have all the requisite properties of prime coking coals, would go a long way in supplementing and conserving the fast depleting resources of coking coals.
