Abstract

A quality survey in relation to the structural peculiarity of the potential seams of the Raniganj Measures in ht south-western part (Madhukunda-Poradiha area) of the Raniganj coalfield is presented. The study reveals that there is a significant deterioration of quality as well as maturity of the coal seams from west to east. The bore hole data reveasl that the Dishergarh seam (R-IV) is found to occur at a very shallow depth around bore hole No. RN-14, thereby indicating a probable outcrop of ironstone shales (Barren Measures) adjacent to this bore hole, and the Barakar Measure rocks are also expected within approachable depth around this bore hole in the area. Central sector of this area appears to be most promising with potential reserves of caking/blendable type of coal.
