Abstract

The paper presents the physical and chemical properties, ash composition rank and petrographic make-up of an Upper Gondwana coal deposit in Guneri area of Kutch district, Gujarat. It is a high volatile, low rank, bituminous coal. Except for the high sulphur, the quality, and the coal properties indicate its suitability for power generation. The investigation is significantly important since the rank, petrographic composition and detailed coal properties of Upper Gondwana coal were hitherto unknown. Geologically the coal deposit of Guneri belongs to Cretaceous age.
