Abstract

The inorganic constituents associated with lignites in India have been studied by chemical, differential thermal analyses and X-ray diffractometric methods. The chief minerals identified so far are clay-mica, (illite), quartz, pyrities, gypsum and, in some cases, kaolinite. The ashes obtained after incineration are, in general. Found to be rich in calcium, magnesium, iron and sulphate and often in sodium. Sulphate in the ash comes from gypsum and also fixation of sulphur in the lignites by cations like calcium, magnesium and sodium. A large amount of these cations are found to be associated with carboxyl groups in the lignite body. The effect of heat in the inorganic constituents has been dealt with respect to occurrence of boiler deposits on the one hand and with reference to slagging on the other Suitability of Indian Lignites for use in slag tap combustors and gasifiers has been indicated.
